Markdown is a lightweight markup language created by John Gruber in 2004 for writing formatted text using a plain-text editor. With simple syntax like # for headings and **bold** for emphasis, Markdown is widely used for documentation, README files, technical writing, and note-taking. Files typically use .md or .markdown extensions.

Markdown's simplicity makes it ideal for version-controlled documentation—GitHub, GitLab, and most development platforms render it natively. For sharing with non-technical audiences or printing, converting to PDF preserves formatting universally.

PDF (Portable Document Format) is Adobe's universal document standard, designed to present text, images, and layout consistently across any device or platform. First released in 1993 and later standardized as ISO 32000, PDF supports vector graphics, embedded fonts, forms, annotations, and encryption. It has become the de facto format for document exchange, digital publishing, and archival—billions of PDFs are created daily worldwide.

PDF excels at preserving document fidelity and works universally—every operating system and browser includes native PDF support. For long-term archival or regulatory compliance, PDF/A is the appropriate variant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert Markdown to PDF?

Professional distribution. While Markdown is great for writing, PDF is the standard for sharing documents professionally. Converting MD to PDF gives you a polished, printable document that looks consistent across all devices and platforms.

What Markdown features are supported?

We support rich Markdown with all GitHub Flavored Markdown features: headers (h1-h6), bold and italic, code blocks with syntax highlighting, lists (ordered, unordered, and task lists), tables, blockquotes, links, footnotes, strikethrough, and math notation. Your READMEs will render correctly. YAML front matter is automatically stripped.

Are code blocks syntax highlighted?

Yes. Fenced code blocks with language identifiers (e.g., ```python) receive syntax highlighting in the PDF output. We support all common programming languages including Python, JavaScript, Java, C++, Go, Rust, and many more.

How are images handled?

Local images referenced via ![alt](path) are embedded in the PDF using relative paths. Remote images with standard extensions (.png, .jpg, .gif, .webp) are downloaded and embedded. Note: Remote images without valid file extensions (such as shields.io badges) are skipped to ensure reliable conversion.

Are links preserved in the PDF?

Yes. External hyperlinks in your Markdown remain clickable in the PDF output. Recipients can click them directly in any PDF reader.

What happens to front matter (YAML metadata)?

YAML front matter at the top of your file (between --- markers) is stripped during conversion. The PDF contains only the rendered Markdown content, not metadata.

Note: File size limits are specific to this converter. Batch and parallel processing limits apply to all documents converters site-wide. See all converter limits →

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 5 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 5 MB: 1 credit
  • 6-10 MB: 2 credits
  • 11-15 MB: 3 credits
  • 16-20 MB: 4 credits

Example: A 5 MB document = 1 credit. A 95 MB document = 19 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Guest100 credits/day
Free100 credits/day
Pro12,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Guest & Free tiers) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit per 5 MB, a typical document costs 1 credit. Pro users can convert 12000 documents per month.
