PDF (Portable Document Format) is Adobe's universal document standard, designed to present text, images, and layout consistently across any device or platform. First released in 1993 and later standardized as ISO 32000, PDF supports vector graphics, embedded fonts, forms, annotations, and encryption. It has become the de facto format for document exchange, digital publishing, and archival—billions of PDFs are created daily worldwide.

PDF excels at preserving document fidelity and works universally—every operating system and browser includes native PDF support. For long-term archival or regulatory compliance, PDF/A is the appropriate variant.

EPUB (Electronic Publication) is an open ebook standard developed by the International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF), now part of the W3C. First released in 2007 as a successor to Open eBook, EPUB has become the most widely supported ebook format. EPUB files are ZIP archives containing HTML/XHTML content, CSS styling, images, and metadata organized according to the EPUB specification.

EPUB's key feature is reflowable content—text automatically adapts to different screen sizes, making it ideal for e-readers, tablets, and phones. The format supports embedded fonts, multimedia (in EPUB 3), and accessibility features. Most e-readers except Amazon Kindle natively support EPUB.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is EPUB format?

EPUB (Electronic Publication) is an open ebook format supported by nearly all e-readers except older Amazon Kindles. It's the most widely compatible ebook format, working on devices from Apple, Kobo, Barnes & Noble, and many others, plus reading apps on iOS, Android, and desktop.

Why convert PDF to EPUB?

Better reading experience. PDFs have fixed layouts optimized for printing, not screens. EPUB is reflowable—text automatically adjusts to your screen size, font preferences, and reading mode. Perfect for reading on phones, tablets, and e-readers where you want to adjust text size.

Does PDF to EPUB conversion work on scanned documents?

Yes. Our converter automatically detects scanned/image-only PDFs and applies OCR (Optical Character Recognition) using Tesseract to extract text before conversion. This makes the resulting EPUB searchable and readable. OCR supports 100+ languages including English, Spanish, French, German, Chinese, Japanese, and Arabic. While Tesseract is the industry-standard open-source OCR engine, it may struggle with complex layouts or degraded scans. We're actively exploring AI-powered OCR options for documents where Tesseract falls short.

Will my PDF's formatting be preserved?

EPUB is a reflowable format, which means complex PDF layouts (multi-column text, precise positioning, embedded forms) cannot be perfectly preserved. The converter extracts text and basic structure (headings, paragraphs, images) but the exact visual layout will differ.

Best results: Text-heavy documents like novels, reports, and articles. Less ideal: Heavily designed PDFs like magazines, brochures, or forms.

Can I convert password-protected PDFs?

No. Password-protected PDFs cannot be converted. You must remove the password protection first, or provide the password to unlock the document. Contact the document owner for an unprotected version if needed.

What devices support EPUB?

EPUB is supported by Apple Books, Kobo, Barnes & Noble Nook, Google Play Books, and most other e-readers. It also works in Calibre, Adobe Digital Editions, and reading apps on iOS, Android, Windows, and Mac. Notably, newer Kindles (2022+) now support EPUB natively.

Should I convert PDFs to EPUB or MOBI for Kindle?

For newer Kindles (2022+), EPUB works natively. For older Kindles, you can either convert to EPUB and let Kindle convert it, or use our EPUB to MOBI converter for guaranteed compatibility.

How is this different from PDF to DOCX conversion?

PDF to DOCX creates an editable Word document optimized for editing and printing. PDF to EPUB creates a reflowable ebook optimized for reading on screens and e-readers. Choose DOCX if you need to edit the content; choose EPUB if you want to read it comfortably on different devices.

What are the limits for this converter?

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 10 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 10 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 11-20 MB: 2 credits
  • 21-30 MB: 3 credits
  • 31-40 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1024 MB: 103 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB file = 1 credit. A 95 MB file = 10 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business25,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit per 10 MB, images under 10 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 images per month.
