AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) leverages the AV1 video codec to deliver next-generation compression—typically 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality, with support for HDR, wide color gamut, and both lossy and lossless compression. Standardized by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019, AVIF offers 10-bit and 12-bit color depth plus full alpha transparency. Encoding is slower than JPEG or WebP, but visual quality per byte is exceptional.

Authoritative reference: AVIF Specification (AOMedia)

AVIF is ideal for modern web delivery where cutting-edge compression and HDR support matter. Browser adoption reached critical mass in 2021-2023, with Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16.4+ now supporting AVIF natively. Encoding is 2-3× slower than WebP, but the compression gains typically justify the extra CPU time for server-side batch processing. For maximum compatibility, serve AVIF with WebP and JPG fallbacks using <picture> elements.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) provides lossless compression with full alpha channel transparency, making it the go-to format for graphics, screenshots, and images requiring pixel-perfect fidelity. Created in 1996 as a patent-free GIF alternative, PNG uses DEFLATE compression and supports both indexed color (PNG-8) and truecolor with alpha (PNG-24/32). Files are 3-10× larger than equivalent JPEGs but preserve every pixel exactly.

PNG is universally supported and ideal for logos, UI elements, diagrams, and any content where transparency or lossless editing matters. For photographic content without transparency needs, JPEG typically offers better compression efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert AVIF back to PNG? Isn't AVIF better?

AVIF is excellent for web delivery (small files, HDR support, 92% browser support), but PNG offers unique advantages for specific workflows:

  • Universal compatibility: PNG works on 100% of devices, browsers, and software (vs AVIF's 92%)
  • Editing workflows: Photoshop, GIMP, and design tools prefer PNG as the standard editing format
  • Archival stability: PNG has been stable for 20+ years; AVIF is newer (2019) and still evolving
  • Transparency standard: PNG is the established format for transparent graphics, logos, and UI assets
  • Print workflows: Print shops and professional workflows require PNG (AVIF not widely supported yet)

When to choose PNG: Editing, archiving, legacy systems, print production, universal compatibility.
When to keep AVIF: Modern web delivery, cutting-edge browsers, file size critical.

Will my file size explode?

Yes. PNG files will be 5-10× larger than AVIF at equivalent visual quality. This is expected and unavoidable:

  • 500 KB AVIF → 3-5 MB PNG
  • 2 MB AVIF → 10-20 MB PNG
  • 10 MB AVIF → 50-100 MB PNG

Why? AVIF uses cutting-edge AV1 compression (28% smaller than WebP, 50%+ smaller than JPG). PNG uses simple lossless compression from 1996. You're trading file size for perfect quality and universal compatibility. Want a better balance? Try AVIF to WebP for 93% browser support with only 20-40% larger files.

Will I lose quality?

No! AVIF to PNG conversion is completely lossless. The AVIF is decoded perfectly (every pixel, every color value), and PNG encodes every pixel exactly as decoded with zero compression artifacts.

What's preserved:

  • Pixel-perfect accuracy (100% lossless)
  • Transparency/alpha channel (if present in AVIF)
  • Color depth (decoded to full RGB or RGBA)
  • HDR information (10-bit AVIF color preserved in PNG)

What's NOT preserved:

  • EXIF metadata (stripped by default for privacy, configurable)
  • File size efficiency (PNG is 5-10× larger)

What happens to transparency?

PNG fully supports alpha channels (transparency). Any transparency in your AVIF will be perfectly preserved in the PNG output.

  • AVIF with alpha → PNG with alpha (default behavior)
  • AVIF without alpha → PNG without alpha (RGB only, smaller file)

This is one of PNG's strengths compared to JPG (which doesn't support transparency). Both AVIF and PNG support transparency, so conversion is lossless.

Can I preserve HDR color from AVIF in PNG?

Partially. AVIF supports 10/12-bit HDR with wide color gamut (BT.2020, Display P3). During conversion:

  • Color depth: Downsampled to 8-bit PNG for maximum compatibility
  • Color space: Converted to sRGB (standard color space for web and most displays)
  • HDR highlights: Tone-mapped to fit standard dynamic range

For most uses, the output looks excellent. Subtle color shifts may occur if your AVIF uses a specialized wide-gamut profile (e.g., HDR photos from iPhone 14+). For professional color-critical work, consider keeping the AVIF original or using specialized HDR-aware software.

What happens to animated AVIF files?

We extract the first frame. Animated AVIF (similar to animated WebP or GIF) outputs a single PNG of the opening frame. Animation cannot be preserved in static PNG format.

Need to preserve animation?

  • Keep as AVIF: If your target supports it (modern browsers)
  • Convert to WebP: Animated WebP has 97% browser support
  • Convert to GIF: Universal compatibility but larger files and 256-color limit

Is AVIF decode slow?

Yes. AVIF uses the AV1 codec, which is very CPU-intensive. Expect conversion times 2-3× longer than HEIC→PNG or WebP→PNG.

Typical times (based on 10MP image):

  • WebP→PNG: 200-400ms (fast, VP8/VP9 codec)
  • HEIC→PNG: 300-600ms (moderate, HEVC codec)
  • AVIF→PNG: 600-1200ms (slow, AV1 codec)

Why? AVIF achieves its exceptional compression through very complex encoding/decoding. The AV1 codec prioritizes file size over speed. This is normal and expected. Need faster decode with broader browser support? Try our AVIF to WebP converter for 2-3× faster processing.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit each

How it works:

  • Files up to 25 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 26-50 MB: 2 credits
  • 51-75 MB: 3 credits
  • 76-100 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 40 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB image = 1 credit. A 95 MB image = 4 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business30,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit each, images under 25 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 images per month.
