BMP (Bitmap Image File) is Microsoft's native raster graphics format, typically storing uncompressed pixel data in BGR color order. Introduced with Windows 1.0 in 1985, BMP files are straightforward—essentially raw pixel arrays with minimal metadata—but extremely large compared to compressed formats. While BMP supports optional RLE compression, most implementations store pixels uncompressed for simplicity and compatibility.

BMP is primarily encountered in legacy Windows applications and embedded systems where simplicity matters more than file size. For modern use, PNG offers lossless compression with universal compatibility at a fraction of the file size.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the universal standard for photographic images, using lossy DCT-based compression to achieve 10:1 or higher compression ratios with minimal visible quality loss. First published in 1992, it supports 24-bit color and works across every device, browser, and application. The lossy nature means repeated editing and saving degrades quality—best used as a final delivery format.

JPEG excels at photographic content and remains the de facto standard for sharing, publishing, and web delivery. With mature encoders like MozJPEG delivering excellent quality-to-size ratios, JPEG continues to dominate despite newer alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are BMP files so massive?

BMP is completely uncompressed—every pixel stored as raw RGB data. A 1920×1080 BMP is always 6.2 MB (width × height × 3 bytes). No compression, no optimization. This is why BMPs are 10-100× larger than JPG/PNG.

How much smaller will my files be?

BMP to JPG typically achieves 92-95% file size reduction with quality 92 JPEG encoding. A 50 MB BMP becomes ~2.5 MB JPG. Photos compress best; screenshots with sharp text may be slightly larger.

What happens to transparency in BMP v4/v5 files?

JPEG doesn't support transparency. BMP v4/v5 alpha channels (rare, but supported) are automatically flattened to a white background (#FFFFFF) during conversion. Standard 24-bit BMPs have no transparency and convert directly. Need to preserve transparency? Try our BMP to PNG converter for full alpha channel support.

Will I notice quality degradation?

Unlikely for most images. Quality 92 JPEG (higher than typical web JPGs at 85-90) preserves excellent fidelity. Photos and gradients look nearly identical to the uncompressed BMP. Screenshots may show slight softening around sharp edges, but the dramatic file size reduction is worth it. For pixel-perfect screenshots and graphics, try our BMP to PNG converter for lossless compression without softening.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 5 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 5 MB: 1 credit
  • 6-10 MB: 2 credits
  • 11-15 MB: 3 credits
  • 16-20 MB: 4 credits

Example: A 5 MB image = 1 credit. A 95 MB image = 19 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Guest100 credits/day
Free100 credits/day
Pro12,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Guest & Free tiers) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit per 5 MB, images under 5 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 12,000 images per month.
