ICO is the standard format for website favicons—the small icons shown in browser tabs, bookmarks, and address bars. An ICO file can bundle multiple resolutions (16×16 up to 256×256 pixels) so browsers choose the best size for each context. Modern ICO files store images as PNG internally, preserving full transparency and sharp edges.

Originally created by Microsoft for Windows application icons, ICO remains the most widely supported favicon format across all browsers. While newer options like SVG favicons exist, ICO guarantees compatibility with every browser and platform.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) provides lossless compression with full alpha channel transparency, making it the go-to format for graphics, screenshots, and images requiring pixel-perfect fidelity. Created in 1996 as a patent-free GIF alternative, PNG uses DEFLATE compression and supports both indexed color (PNG-8) and truecolor with alpha (PNG-24/32). Files are 3-10× larger than equivalent JPEGs but preserve every pixel exactly.

PNG is universally supported and ideal for logos, UI elements, diagrams, and any content where transparency or lossless editing matters. For photographic content without transparency needs, JPEG typically offers better compression efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

What resolution will I get from my ICO file?

We extract the largest image stored in your ICO file—typically 256×256 pixels for modern icons, or 48×48 for older ones. ICO files are containers that hold multiple sizes; we automatically select the highest quality version.

Is transparency preserved?

Yes! PNG supports alpha transparency, so any transparent areas in your icon are preserved perfectly. This is ideal for logos, app icons, and overlays.

Do I lose any quality when extracting?

No quality is lost. Modern ICO files store images internally as PNG data—we extract it directly without re-encoding. Older BMP-based ICOs are converted to PNG losslessly with full color and transparency preservation.

Can I extract all sizes from an ICO file?

Currently, we extract only the largest resolution for maximum quality. The 256px version contains all the detail—you can resize it down in any image editor if you need smaller versions.

What about animated ICO files?

Animated ICO files (rare) will have their first or largest frame extracted. For full animation support, consider specialized animation tools.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit each

How it works:

  • Files up to 0 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • Over 0 MB: 1 credit (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB icon = 1 credit. A 95 MB icon = 1 credit.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business30,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit each, icons under 0 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 icons per month.
