JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the universal standard for photographic images, using lossy DCT-based compression to achieve 10:1 or higher compression ratios with minimal visible quality loss. First published in 1992, it supports 24-bit color and works across every device, browser, and application. The lossy nature means repeated editing and saving degrades quality—best used as a final delivery format.

JPEG excels at photographic content and remains the de facto standard for sharing, publishing, and web delivery. With mature encoders like MozJPEG delivering excellent quality-to-size ratios, JPEG continues to dominate despite newer alternatives.

PNG (Portable Network Graphics) provides lossless compression with full alpha channel transparency, making it the go-to format for graphics, screenshots, and images requiring pixel-perfect fidelity. Created in 1996 as a patent-free GIF alternative, PNG uses DEFLATE compression and supports both indexed color (PNG-8) and truecolor with alpha (PNG-24/32). Files are 3-10× larger than equivalent JPEGs but preserve every pixel exactly.

PNG is universally supported and ideal for logos, UI elements, diagrams, and any content where transparency or lossless editing matters. For photographic content without transparency needs, JPEG typically offers better compression efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will converting JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. PNG is lossless, but it preserves the JPEG compression artifacts from the original file. Converting JPG→PNG is useful for editing workflows (to prevent further quality loss) or when you need a lossless format, but it won't recover detail already lost to JPEG compression. Think of it as a "lossless container upgrade" rather than quality improvement.

Why are PNG files so much larger than JPG?

PNG uses lossless compression while JPEG uses lossy. A typical 2MB JPEG may become 15-40MB as PNG. The size increase reflects all the original pixel data being stored with lossless deflate compression. This is why JPEG is preferred for photos (smaller files, imperceptible quality loss) and PNG is preferred for graphics/screenshots (perfect quality, supports transparency). For smaller files with web delivery in mind, consider JPG to WebP which can reduce file sizes by 25-35%.

When should I convert JPG to PNG?

Convert when you need:

  • Lossless editing: Prevents generational quality loss from repeated saves in image editors.
  • Format compatibility: Some tools/workflows require PNG (print services, game engines).
  • Transparency support: PNG supports alpha channel (though your JPG source won't have any).
  • Archival storage: Lossless format for permanent preservation.

Don't convert if: You're just sharing photos online. JPEGs are smaller and faster to load. Only convert if you have a specific need for PNG. For web optimization with smaller files, consider our JPG to WebP converter instead.

What happens to EXIF metadata and GPS data?

We apply orientation (so your PNG displays correctly), then strip EXIF metadata and GPS by default for privacy. This includes camera model, timestamp, location coordinates, and other potentially sensitive data. Colors are converted to sRGB for consistent display across devices and browsers. The PNG output is privacy-safe and ready to share.

How long do you keep my files?

Files auto-delete after 1 hour. You can also delete immediately after downloading with one click. We never store filenames—only file types and sizes for accounting. We never train AI models on uploads. All processing happens on dedicated servers with encryption in transit and at rest.

What if I need to convert PNG back to JPG later?

That's easy—just use our PNG to JPG converter. Since PNG is lossless, converting to PNG first then back to JPG loses no additional quality compared to keeping the original JPG. This workflow is useful for editing: convert to PNG, make edits without generational loss, then export to JPG for sharing.

What are the limits for this converter?

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 25 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 25 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 26-50 MB: 2 credits
  • 51-75 MB: 3 credits
  • 76-100 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 40 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB image = 1 credit. A 95 MB image = 4 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business30,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit per 25 MB, images under 25 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 images per month.
