PNG (Portable Network Graphics) provides lossless compression with full alpha channel transparency, making it the go-to format for graphics, screenshots, and images requiring pixel-perfect fidelity. Created in 1996 as a patent-free GIF alternative, PNG uses DEFLATE compression and supports both indexed color (PNG-8) and truecolor with alpha (PNG-24/32). Files are 3-10× larger than equivalent JPEGs but preserve every pixel exactly.

PNG is universally supported and ideal for logos, UI elements, diagrams, and any content where transparency or lossless editing matters. For photographic content without transparency needs, JPEG typically offers better compression efficiency.

About ICO

ICO is the standard format for website favicons—the small icons shown in browser tabs, bookmarks, and address bars. An ICO file can bundle multiple resolutions (16×16 up to 256×256 pixels) so browsers choose the best size for each context. Modern ICO files store images as PNG internally, preserving full transparency and sharp edges.

Originally created by Microsoft for Windows application icons, ICO remains the most widely supported favicon format across all browsers. While newer options like SVG favicons exist, ICO guarantees compatibility with every browser and platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you preserve transparency?

Yes. All six layers (16px, 32px, 48px, 64px, 128px, 256px) are encoded as 32-bit RGBA PNG inside the ICO container, preserving full alpha channel transparency.

What if my PNG isn't square?

We center-crop rectangular images to a square before generating all six resolutions. This avoids distortion and ensures your icon looks correct in Windows. If you need precise control over cropping, prepare a square PNG at 256×256 or larger before uploading.

What's the recommended input size?

Upload at least 256×256 for best quality across all ICO layers. Smaller PNGs will be upscaled automatically, but may appear less sharp. Higher resolution source images (512×512 or larger) work great—we'll downsample cleanly to the 6 standard sizes.

Can I use ICO files for website favicons?

Yes. ICO remains the most compatible favicon format, especially for older browsers and Windows desktop shortcuts. Modern browsers also support PNG and SVG, but ICO ensures universal compatibility. Upload your ICO as favicon.ico in your website root.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 25 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 25 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 26-50 MB: 2 credits
  • 51-75 MB: 3 credits
  • 76-100 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 40 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB image = 1 credit. A 95 MB image = 4 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business30,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.
