About ORF
ORF (Olympus Raw Format) is the proprietary RAW image format used by Olympus cameras and the newer OM System brand. ORF files store unprocessed 12-bit to 14-bit sensor data from Micro Four Thirds sensors, preserving maximum dynamic range and color information. The format includes embedded JPEG previews, comprehensive EXIF metadata, and Olympus's acclaimed in-body image stabilization (IBIS) data.

ORF is the standard RAW format for Olympus/OM System cameras including the OM-1, OM-1 Mark II, OM-5, E-M1X, and PEN series. These cameras are known for exceptional weather sealing and computational photography features like High Res Shot and Live ND. For sharing or web publishing, conversion to JPEG is necessary since RAW formats require specialized software like Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, or OM System's OM Workspace.
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the universal standard for photographic images, using lossy DCT-based compression to achieve 10:1 or higher compression ratios with minimal visible quality loss. First published in 1992, it supports 24-bit color and works across every device, browser, and application. The lossy nature means repeated editing and saving degrades quality—best used as a final delivery format.

JPEG excels at photographic content and remains the de facto standard for sharing, publishing, and web delivery. With mature encoders like MozJPEG delivering excellent quality-to-size ratios, JPEG continues to dominate despite newer alternatives.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an ORF file?
ORF (Olympus Raw Format) is the proprietary RAW image format used by Olympus cameras since the E-1 in 2003, and now by OM System cameras following the 2021 brand transition. ORF files store 12-bit unprocessed sensor data from Micro Four Thirds sensors.
ORF preserves the full dynamic range and color information captured by the sensor, allowing extensive post-processing adjustments to exposure, white balance, and color grading that would degrade a JPG.
ORF files typically range from 15-25 MB for standard shots, with High Res Shot composites reaching 80+ MB.
Is OM System the same as Olympus?
Yes, they use the same ORF format. In January 2021, OM Digital Solutions acquired Olympus's imaging division and rebranded as OM System. All cameras—whether branded Olympus or OM System—produce identical ORF files.
This converter supports both:
- OM System (2021+): OM-1, OM-1 Mark II, OM-5
- Olympus: E-M1X, E-M1 Mark III/II/I, E-M5 Mark III/II/I, E-M10 IV/III/II/I, PEN-F, E-PL10/9/8/7, E-P7/5
Are High Res Shot files supported?
Yes. High Res Shot mode captures multiple exposures and combines them into a single high-resolution ORF file (up to 80MP on the OM-1). These composite ORF files are fully supported.
Note: High Res Shot ORF files are significantly larger (60-100 MB) and may take longer to process than standard single-exposure ORF files.
Will I lose quality converting ORF to JPG?
Some data reduction occurs, but quality remains excellent. ORF files contain 12-bit RAW sensor data with full dynamic range. JPG is an 8-bit lossy format, so highlight/shadow recovery latitude is reduced.
Our converter uses:
- Quality 90 encoding (high quality, minimal artifacts)
- sRGB color space for universal compatibility
- Auto white balance with camera-embedded hints
- LibRaw for accurate Micro Four Thirds demosaicing
For lossless output with full color depth, use our ORF to PNG converter.
What software can edit ORF files?
ORF files are supported by most professional photo editors:
- OM Workspace (free from OM System) — Native editor with full feature support
- Adobe Lightroom/Camera Raw — Full support via Adobe Camera Raw
- Capture One — Excellent Micro Four Thirds color science
- DxO PhotoLab — Advanced noise reduction for high-ISO ORF
- Darktable (free, open-source) — Full ORF support
Converting to JPG is useful for sharing, web upload, or archiving processed images without requiring RAW-capable software.
What are the limits for this converter?
| Tier | Max File Size | Max Files/Batch | Parallel Processing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 50 MB | 50 files | 3 at once |
| Pro | 200 MB | 200 files | 6 at once |
| Business | 1024 MB | 1000 files | 10 at once |

How are credits calculated for this conversion?
Cost: 1 credit per 50 MB
How it works:
- Files up to 50 ORF files: 1 credit (minimum)
- 51-100 ORF files: 2 credits
- 101-150 ORF files: 3 credits
- 151-200 ORF files: 4 credits
- Over 1000 ORF files: 20 credits (maximum cap)
Example: A 5 MB file = 1 credit. A 95 MB file = 2 credits.
Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).
What are my daily and monthly credit limits?
Credit allocations vary by account tier:
| Tier | Daily Limit | Monthly Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 50 credits/day | — |
| Pro | — | 10,000 credits/month |
| Business | — | 30,000 credits/month |
Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.
Note: With 1 credit per 50 MB, images under 50 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 images per month.
