About RAF

RAF (RAw Fujifilm) is Fujifilm's proprietary RAW image format used by X-series and GFX medium format cameras. RAF files store unprocessed 14-bit sensor data, including from Fujifilm's unique X-Trans CMOS sensors (used in most X-series cameras) which use a non-Bayer color filter array that reduces moire and false color without optical low-pass filters. This results in exceptional sharpness and color rendition renowned among photographers.

RAF is the standard RAW format for popular Fujifilm cameras including the X-T5, X-H2, X-H2S, X-Pro3, X100VI, and the medium format GFX 100S and GFX 100 II. Fujifilm's acclaimed film simulations are embedded as metadata. For sharing or web publishing, conversion to JPEG is necessary since RAW formats require specialized software like Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, or Fujifilm's X Raw Studio.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the universal standard for photographic images, using lossy DCT-based compression to achieve 10:1 or higher compression ratios with minimal visible quality loss. First published in 1992, it supports 24-bit color and works across every device, browser, and application. The lossy nature means repeated editing and saving degrades quality—best used as a final delivery format.

JPEG excels at photographic content and remains the de facto standard for sharing, publishing, and web delivery. With mature encoders like MozJPEG delivering excellent quality-to-size ratios, JPEG continues to dominate despite newer alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Fujifilm cameras are supported?

All Fujifilm X-series and GFX cameras that shoot RAF files are supported:

X-Series Mirrorless: X-T5, X-T4, X-T3, X-T2, X-T1, X-T50, X-T30 II, X-T30, X-T20, X-H2, X-H2S, X-H1, X-Pro3, X-Pro2, X-Pro1, X-E4, X-E3, X-S20, X-S10, X100VI, X100V, X100F, X100T

GFX Medium Format: GFX 100 II, GFX 100S, GFX 100, GFX 50S II, GFX 50S, GFX 50R

What makes RAF files special?

RAF files store data from Fujifilm's unique X-Trans sensor. Unlike traditional Bayer sensors that use a repeating 2x2 RGGB pattern, X-Trans uses a larger 6x6 pseudo-random pattern that mimics the random grain structure of film.

This design reduces moire and color aliasing without requiring an optical low-pass filter (OLPF), resulting in inherently sharper images. RAF files are 14-bit and preserve this unique color filter array data.

Our converter uses LibRaw's X-Trans demosaicing algorithms to produce accurate JPG output.

Are film simulations preserved in the conversion?

Film simulation metadata is stored in the RAF file but our converter applies a neutral color profile rather than baking in a specific film simulation.

If you want JPGs with your chosen film simulation (Classic Neg, Velvia, Provia, etc.), you have two options:

  • Use your camera's in-camera JPG+RAW mode to get both
  • Process RAF files in Fujifilm X Raw Studio (free) or Capture One to apply film simulations

Will I lose quality converting to JPG?

For viewing and sharing, no visible loss. We use quality 90 JPEG encoding—higher than typical web images. You lose RAW editing flexibility (can't recover highlights/shadows like in Lightroom), but the visual output is excellent. For archival, keep your original RAF files. Need truly lossless output? Use our RAF to PNG converter instead.

Best software for editing RAF files?

Recommended software for Fujifilm RAF editing:

  • Capture One: Excellent X-Trans processing, supports all film simulations
  • Adobe Lightroom: Good support, though X-Trans rendering improved significantly in 2023
  • Fujifilm X Raw Studio: Free from Fujifilm, applies in-camera profiles via tethering
  • DxO PhotoLab: Strong noise reduction for high-ISO RAF files
  • Darktable: Open source with dedicated X-Trans demosaicing

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 10 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 10 MB: 1 credit
  • 11-20 MB: 2 credits
  • 21-30 MB: 3 credits
  • 31-40 MB: 4 credits

Example: A 5 MB photo = 1 credit. A 95 MB photo = 10 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Guest100 credits/day
Free100 credits/day
Pro12,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Guest & Free tiers) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit per 10 MB, RAF files under 10 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 12,000 RAF files per month.
