RAW image files contain minimally processed data directly from a digital camera's image sensor, preserving maximum detail and dynamic range for post-production editing. Unlike compressed formats like JPEG, RAW files retain all captured light information with 12-14 bit color depth, enabling non-destructive adjustments to exposure, white balance, shadows, and highlights without quality loss.

Our universal RAW converter supports 20+ camera RAW formats from all major manufacturers: Canon (CR2, CR3, CRW), Nikon (NEF, NRW), Sony (ARW, SR2, SRF), Fujifilm (RAF), Adobe DNG, Panasonic (RW2, RAW), Olympus/OM System (ORF), Pentax (PEF), Hasselblad (3FR, FFF), Phase One (IIQ), Samsung (SRW), Sigma (X3F), GoPro (GPR), Minolta (MRW), Kodak (DCR, KDC), Epson (ERF), Mamiya (MEF), and Leaf (MOS).

WebP is Google's modern image format offering both lossy and lossless compression modes, plus alpha transparency and animation support—essentially combining the best features of JPEG, PNG, and GIF. Announced in 2010, WebP typically delivers 25-35% smaller files than JPEG at comparable quality using VP8 or VP8L compression. All major browsers now support WebP, making it a practical choice for web optimization.

WebP strikes an excellent balance between compression efficiency and ecosystem maturity. It's widely adopted for web delivery, supported across all modern browsers (Chrome 32+, Firefox 65+, Safari 14+, Edge 18+), and offers better compression than JPEG/PNG without the encoding overhead of AVIF.

CMS support: WordPress 5.8+ (July 2021) supports WebP natively. Most modern CMS platforms and CDNs (Cloudflare, Akamai, Fastly) can automatically serve WebP to compatible browsers via content negotiation.

Email limitation: Most email clients (Outlook, Gmail web, Apple Mail) do not support WebP. Always use JPG or PNG for email images, or provide a JPG fallback via <picture> elements in HTML emails.

Why choose WebP?

WebP offers the best balance of quality and file size for the web. Developed by Google, WebP typically produces files 25-35% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality. It's supported by all modern browsers and is the preferred format for web performance. Use WebP when your photos are destined for websites, blogs, or social media.

What settings are used for the conversion?

Conversion settings:

  • White balance: Preserved from your camera's as-shot settings
  • Exposure: Auto-brightness applied (matches typical RAW processors)
  • Color space: sRGB with standard gamma curve for accurate web display
  • WebP quality: 80 — excellent visual quality with efficient compression
  • Metadata: Stripped for privacy (no GPS, camera info, or shooting settings)

How much smaller will WebP files be?

Typically 90-95% smaller than RAW. A 64 MB RAW becomes ~3-6 MB WebP. WebP is also about 25-35% smaller than equivalent-quality JPEG, making it ideal for web publishing where bandwidth matters.

What about Apple ProRAW and Pixel RAW?

Fully supported! Apple ProRAW (from iPhone 12 Pro and later) and Google Pixel RAW files use the Adobe DNG format. Just drop them like any other RAW file. They'll be converted to WebP preserving the computational photography benefits.

Does WordPress support WebP?

Yes. WordPress has supported WebP natively since version 5.8 (July 2021). After converting your RAW photos to WebP, you can upload them directly to WordPress without plugins.

  • Native support: WordPress 5.8+ handles WebP uploads, resizing, and thumbnail generation
  • CDN integration: Cloudflare, Fastly, and most CDNs can auto-serve WebP to compatible browsers

This makes RAW → WebP an ideal workflow for photographers publishing to WordPress.

Can I use WebP in emails?

No, not reliably. Most email clients (Outlook, Gmail web, Apple Mail, Yahoo) do not support WebP images.

Recommendation: If your RAW photos are destined for email, use our RAW to JPG converter instead—JPG is universally supported in email clients.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 50 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 50 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 51-100 MB: 2 credits
  • 101-150 MB: 3 credits
  • 151-200 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 20 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB photo = 1 credit. A 95 MB photo = 2 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).
