WebP is Google's modern image format offering both lossy and lossless compression modes, plus alpha transparency and animation support—essentially combining the best features of JPEG, PNG, and GIF. Announced in 2010, WebP typically delivers 25-35% smaller files than JPEG at comparable quality using VP8 or VP8L compression. All major browsers now support WebP, making it a practical choice for web optimization.

WebP strikes an excellent balance between compression efficiency and ecosystem maturity. It's widely adopted for web delivery, supported across all modern browsers (Chrome 32+, Firefox 65+, Safari 14+, Edge 18+), and offers better compression than JPEG/PNG without the encoding overhead of AVIF.

CMS support: WordPress 5.8+ (July 2021) supports WebP natively. Most modern CMS platforms and CDNs (Cloudflare, Akamai, Fastly) can automatically serve WebP to compatible browsers via content negotiation.

Email limitation: Most email clients (Outlook, Gmail web, Apple Mail) do not support WebP. Always use JPG or PNG for email images, or provide a JPG fallback via <picture> elements in HTML emails.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the universal standard for photographic images, using lossy DCT-based compression to achieve 10:1 or higher compression ratios with minimal visible quality loss. First published in 1992, it supports 24-bit color and works across every device, browser, and application. The lossy nature means repeated editing and saving degrades quality—best used as a final delivery format.

JPEG excels at photographic content and remains the de facto standard for sharing, publishing, and web delivery. With mature encoders like MozJPEG delivering excellent quality-to-size ratios, JPEG continues to dominate despite newer alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why convert WebP back to JPG?

While WebP is more efficient (25-35% smaller), JPG has better compatibility:

  • Email clients: Outlook, Thunderbird don't support WebP
  • Legacy software: Older Photoshop, MS Paint, photo viewers
  • Print shops: Many require JPG or TIFF for printing
  • Universal support: 100% compatibility across all devices

What happens to animated WebP files?

We extract the first frame. Animated WebP (like animated GIF) can't be represented in static JPEG format. We convert the opening frame to a high-quality JPG. Need to preserve animation? Keep your WebP file, or convert to GIF format for wider email compatibility.

Will my file size increase?

Yes, JPG files are typically 30-50% larger than WebP at equivalent quality. This is the trade-off for universal compatibility.

Examples:

  • 1 MB WebP → 1.3-1.5 MB JPG
  • 5 MB WebP → 6.5-7.5 MB JPG

What happens to transparency in my WebP?

JPEG doesn't support transparency. Any WebP with alpha channel (transparency) will be automatically flattened to a white background (#FFFFFF). This is standard for WebP→JPG conversion and matches how images appear on white backgrounds in browsers and documents. Need to preserve transparency? Try WebP to PNG for lossless conversion with full alpha channel support.

My WebP was already lossy-compressed. Will quality degrade?

Minimally. Converting lossy WebP to JPG introduces a second generation of lossy compression. However, at Quality 90 encoding, the additional quality loss is imperceptible for most images. Both WebP and JPEG use similar DCT-based compression, so artifacts align rather than compound. For archival or editing workflows where every bit matters, convert to PNG instead.

Is the quality loss noticeable?

No. We use JPEG quality 90, which is visually indistinguishable from WebP for most viewing contexts. The conversion preserves all visible detail from the WebP source. Quality 90 is the industry standard for high-quality output suitable for both web and print.

Can I use this for email attachments?

Yes! This is the primary use case. Many email clients (Outlook, Thunderbird, older mobile apps) don't support WebP. Converting to JPG ensures your images display correctly for all recipients.

Will print shops accept these JPG files?

Yes. JPEG quality 90 is the industry standard for high-quality print work. Most commercial printers accept JPG, TIFF, or PDF. Our JPG output is suitable for professional printing.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit each

How it works:

  • Files up to 25 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 26-50 MB: 2 credits
  • 51-75 MB: 3 credits
  • 76-100 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 40 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB image = 1 credit. A 95 MB image = 4 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business30,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit each, images under 25 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 images per month.
