AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) leverages the AV1 video codec to deliver next-generation compression—typically 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality, with support for HDR, wide color gamut, and both lossy and lossless compression. Standardized by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019, AVIF offers 10-bit and 12-bit color depth plus full alpha transparency. Encoding is slower than JPEG or WebP, but visual quality per byte is exceptional.
Authoritative reference: AVIF Specification (AOMedia)
AVIF is ideal for modern web delivery where cutting-edge compression and HDR support matter. Browser adoption reached critical mass in 2021-2023, with Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16.4+ now supporting AVIF natively. Encoding is 2-3× slower than WebP, but the compression gains typically justify the extra CPU time for server-side batch processing. For maximum compatibility, serve AVIF with WebP and JPG fallbacks using <picture> elements.
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the universal standard for photographic images, using lossy DCT-based compression to achieve 10:1 or higher compression ratios with minimal visible quality loss. First published in 1992, it supports 24-bit color and works across every device, browser, and application. The lossy nature means repeated editing and saving degrades quality—best used as a final delivery format.

JPEG excels at photographic content and remains the de facto standard for sharing, publishing, and web delivery. With mature encoders like MozJPEG delivering excellent quality-to-size ratios, JPEG continues to dominate despite newer alternatives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why convert AVIF to JPG if files get larger?
Universal compatibility. While AVIF has excellent compression, it's only supported by 92% of browsers (Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, Safari 16.4+). Convert to JPG when you need:
- Email compatibility: Outlook, Apple Mail, Gmail don't support AVIF
- Social media: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn require JPG/PNG for profile images
- Legacy systems: Older browsers (IE, Safari 15 and earlier) can't display AVIF
- Printing & PDF: Many design tools and print services expect JPG/PNG
- Sharing with non-technical users: JPG opens everywhere, no questions asked
Yes, files will be 2-3× larger (100-200%), but compatibility is often more important than file size.
What happens to transparency (alpha channel)?
JPG does not support transparency. AVIF images with an alpha channel (transparency) will have the transparent areas flattened to a white background (#FFFFFF) during conversion.
Why white? White is the most common background color for web and print. If you need a different background color or want to preserve transparency, try our AVIF to PNG converter for lossless conversion with full alpha channel support.
Example: An AVIF logo with transparent background → JPG logo with white background.
What happens to HDR color (wide color gamut)?
Converted to sRGB. AVIF supports wide color gamut (HDR) with 10-bit or 12-bit color depth. JPG is limited to 8-bit sRGB. During conversion, we automatically convert the color space to sRGB, which may result in:
- Reduced color range: Vibrant colors outside sRGB gamut are clipped
- Banding in gradients: 12-bit → 8-bit reduces smooth transitions
- Loss of HDR highlights: Bright highlights may appear washed out
For most web and print uses, this is acceptable. If you need to preserve HDR color for professional editing, use PNG or keep the AVIF original.
How much larger will my files be?
AVIF to JPG conversion typically results in 2-3× larger files (100-200% increase) because AVIF uses cutting-edge AV1 compression—the most efficient image codec available.
Examples:
- 500 KB AVIF photo → 1.0-1.5 MB JPG (2-3× larger)
- 1 MB AVIF portrait → 2.0-3.0 MB JPG (2-3× larger)
- 2 MB AVIF landscape → 4.0-6.0 MB JPG (2-3× larger)
We encode JPG at Quality 90 to preserve visual fidelity. The size increase is the trade-off for universal compatibility.
When should I use JPG vs AVIF?
Format comparison:
- JPG: 100% browser support, universally compatible with email, social media, legacy systems. Larger file sizes. Use when compatibility is critical.
- AVIF: Best compression (50% smaller than JPG), 92% browser support. Use for modern web delivery with
<picture>fallback. - WebP: Good compression (25-35% smaller than JPG), 93% browser support. Best balance of compression and compatibility without fallback. Try our AVIF to WebP converter for wider browser reach.
Recommendation: Use AVIF for modern web delivery (with fallback), convert to JPG for email, social media, or legacy systems.
Will I lose quality converting AVIF to JPG?
Minimal quality loss for most uses. We encode JPG at Quality 90, which preserves excellent photographic quality. For web, social media, and print applications, the output is visually indistinguishable from the AVIF original.
Important limitations:
- Lossy-to-lossy: Both AVIF and JPG are lossy formats. Converting introduces generation loss.
- Transparency removed: Alpha channel flattened to white
- HDR color reduced: Wide gamut converted to 8-bit sRGB
For archival or editing workflows where lossless quality is required, convert to PNG instead. For publishing and sharing, JPG Quality 90 is excellent.
What happens to animated AVIF files?
We extract the first frame. Animated AVIF (similar to animated WebP or GIF) outputs a single JPG of the opening frame. Animation cannot be preserved in static JPEG format.
Need to preserve animation?
- Keep as AVIF: If your target supports it (modern browsers)
- Convert to WebP: Animated WebP has 97% browser support
- Convert to GIF: Universal compatibility but larger files and 256-color limit
What are the limits for this converter?
| Tier | Max File Size | Max Files/Batch | Parallel Processing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 25 MB | 50 files | 3 at once |
| Pro | 200 MB | 200 files | 6 at once |
| Business | 1024 MB | 1000 files | 10 at once |
Note: File size limits are specific to this converter. Batch and parallel processing limits apply to all images converters site-wide. See all converter limits →
How are credits calculated for this conversion?
Cost: 1 credit per 25 MB
How it works:
- Files up to 25 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
- 26-50 MB: 2 credits
- 51-75 MB: 3 credits
- 76-100 MB: 4 credits
- Over 1000 MB: 40 credits (maximum cap)
Example: A 5 MB image = 1 credit. A 95 MB image = 4 credits.
Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).
What are my daily and monthly credit limits?
Credit allocations vary by account tier:
| Tier | Daily Limit | Monthly Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 50 credits/day | — |
| Pro | — | 10,000 credits/month |
| Business | — | 30,000 credits/month |
Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.
Note: With 1 credit per 25 MB, images under 25 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 images per month.
