CR2 (Canon Raw 2) is Canon's proprietary RAW image format used from 2004 to 2018, built on the TIFF file structure. It stores unprocessed sensor data with 14-bit color depth, giving photographers complete control over white balance, exposure, and color grading in post-production. Files include an embedded JPEG preview and comprehensive EXIF metadata including camera settings and lens information.

CR2 remains widely used due to the large install base of Canon DSLRs like the 5D series, 6D, 7D, 80D, and Rebel cameras. For sharing or web publishing, conversion to JPEG or other universal formats is necessary since RAW formats require specialized software like Lightroom or Canon DPP.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the universal standard for photographic images, using lossy DCT-based compression to achieve 10:1 or higher compression ratios with minimal visible quality loss. First published in 1992, it supports 24-bit color and works across every device, browser, and application. The lossy nature means repeated editing and saving degrades quality—best used as a final delivery format.

JPEG excels at photographic content and remains the de facto standard for sharing, publishing, and web delivery. With mature encoders like MozJPEG delivering excellent quality-to-size ratios, JPEG continues to dominate despite newer alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CR2 file?

CR2 (Canon RAW version 2) is Canon's proprietary RAW image format used in DSLRs and some PowerShot cameras from 2004-2018.

Unlike JPG, CR2 files contain unprocessed sensor data with 14-bit color depth—giving you maximum flexibility for exposure correction, white balance adjustment, and color grading in software like Lightroom or Capture One.

The tradeoff: CR2 files are 20-40 MB each, can't be viewed directly in browsers, and require conversion for sharing online or via messaging apps.

What Canon cameras shoot CR2?

All Canon DSLRs from 2004-2018: EOS 5D (all marks), 6D (I/II), 7D (I/II), 80D, 77D, 70D, 60D, Rebel T7i/T6i/T5i/T4i/T3i, SL3/SL2, and PowerShot G-series. Most Canon cameras before 2018 use CR2 format.

Will I lose quality converting CR2 to JPG?

For viewing and sharing, no visible loss. We use quality 90 JPEG encoding—higher than typical web images. You lose RAW editing flexibility (can't recover highlights/shadows like in Lightroom), but the visual output is excellent. For archival, keep your original CR2 files.

What settings are used for the conversion?

Conversion settings:

  • White balance: Preserved from your camera's as-shot settings
  • Exposure: Auto-brightness applied (matches Windows 11 Photos app)
  • Color space: sRGB with standard gamma curve for accurate web display
  • JPEG quality: 90 — higher than typical web images for excellent detail retention
  • Metadata: Stripped for privacy (no GPS, camera info, or shooting settings)

Output matches Windows 11 Photos app. We use the same auto-brightness and color processing that Windows applies when you open a CR2 file.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

Typically 90-95% smaller. A 30 MB CR2 from a 5D Mark IV becomes 2-5 MB JPG. A 20 MB CR2 from a Rebel T7i becomes 1-3 MB JPG. Actual size depends on image complexity and detail.

What happens to EXIF data (camera settings, GPS)?

Stripped by default for privacy. Camera model, lens info, GPS coordinates, and shooting settings are removed during conversion. This protects your privacy when sharing online.

Need lossless output?

Use our CR2 to PNG converter instead. PNG is lossless—every pixel from your RAW file is preserved exactly. Choose PNG when you need to edit further in Photoshop/GIMP, print high-quality photos, or archive masters. Note: PNG files are 5-10x larger than JPGs.

Have a newer Canon camera (EOS R series)?

Use our CR3 to JPG converter instead. Canon switched to CR3 format in 2018 for all EOS R mirrorless cameras (R5, R6, R7, R8, R10, etc.) and recent PowerShots. CR3 offers better compression and improved metadata handling.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 50 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 50 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 51-100 MB: 2 credits
  • 101-150 MB: 3 credits
  • 151-200 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 20 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB photo = 1 credit. A 95 MB photo = 2 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business30,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit per 50 MB, RAW files under 50 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 RAW files per month.
