CR3 (Canon Raw 3) is Canon's proprietary RAW image format introduced in 2018 with the EOS M50, replacing the older CR2 format. Built on the ISO Base Media File Format (similar to MP4), CR3 stores unprocessed sensor data with 14-bit color depth, allowing photographers full control over white balance, exposure, and color grading in post-production. Files include an embedded JPEG preview and extensive EXIF metadata.

CR3 is essential for professional photographers using modern Canon cameras who need maximum editing flexibility. For sharing or web publishing, conversion to JPEG or other universal formats is necessary since RAW formats require specialized software.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the universal standard for photographic images, using lossy DCT-based compression to achieve 10:1 or higher compression ratios with minimal visible quality loss. First published in 1992, it supports 24-bit color and works across every device, browser, and application. The lossy nature means repeated editing and saving degrades quality—best used as a final delivery format.

JPEG excels at photographic content and remains the de facto standard for sharing, publishing, and web delivery. With mature encoders like MozJPEG delivering excellent quality-to-size ratios, JPEG continues to dominate despite newer alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a CR3 file?

CR3 (Canon RAW version 3) is Canon's latest RAW image format introduced in 2018 with the EOS M50 and used across all EOS R mirrorless cameras.

CR3 uses HEIF-based container format with improved compression—files are ~20% smaller than CR2 while maintaining full 14-bit RAW quality. It also stores richer metadata including C-RAW (compressed RAW) options.

Like all RAW formats, CR3 files can't be viewed directly in browsers or shared via messaging apps—they need conversion to JPG, PNG, or WebP first.

What Canon cameras shoot CR3?

All EOS R mirrorless cameras: R, R3, R5, R5 C, R6, R6 Mark II, R7, R8, R10, R50, R100. Also M50, M50 Mark II, M6 Mark II, PowerShot G5 X Mark II, G7 X Mark III, and newer models from 2018 onwards.

Will I lose quality converting CR3 to JPG?

For viewing and sharing, no visible loss. We use quality 90 JPEG encoding—higher than typical web images. You lose RAW editing flexibility (can't recover highlights/shadows like in Lightroom), but the visual output is excellent. For archival, keep your original CR3 files.

What settings are used for the conversion?

Conversion settings:

  • White balance: Preserved from your camera's as-shot settings
  • Exposure: Auto-brightness applied (matches Windows 11 Photos app)
  • Color space: sRGB with standard gamma curve for accurate web display
  • JPEG quality: 90 — higher than typical web images for excellent detail retention
  • Metadata: Stripped for privacy (no GPS, camera info, or shooting settings)

Output matches Windows 11 Photos app. We use the same auto-brightness and color processing that Windows applies when you open a CR3 file.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

Typically 90-95% smaller. A 45 MB CR3 from an R5 becomes 2-5 MB JPG. A 25 MB CR3 from an R7 becomes 1-3 MB JPG. Actual size depends on image complexity and detail.

What happens to EXIF data (camera settings, GPS)?

Stripped by default for privacy. Camera model, lens info, GPS coordinates, and shooting settings are removed during conversion. This protects your privacy when sharing online.

What if I need lossless output?

Use our CR3 to PNG converter for lossless conversion. PNG preserves every pixel—ideal for editing in Photoshop/GIMP or archiving masters. Files are larger (60-70 MB vs 2-5 MB), but quality is identical to RAW. JPG is better for sharing/web use.

Have an older Canon DSLR?

Use our CR2 to JPG converter instead. Canon DSLRs before 2018 (5D series, 6D, 7D, 80D, Rebel series) use the CR2 format. Check your file extension—if it ends in .CR2, use the CR2 converter.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 50 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 50 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 51-100 MB: 2 credits
  • 101-150 MB: 3 credits
  • 151-200 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 20 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB photo = 1 credit. A 95 MB photo = 2 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business30,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit per 50 MB, RAW files under 50 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 RAW files per month.
