WebP is Google's modern image format offering both lossy and lossless compression modes, plus alpha transparency and animation support—essentially combining the best features of JPEG, PNG, and GIF. Announced in 2010, WebP typically delivers 25-35% smaller files than JPEG at comparable quality using VP8 or VP8L compression. All major browsers now support WebP, making it a practical choice for web optimization.

WebP strikes an excellent balance between compression efficiency and ecosystem maturity. It's widely adopted for web delivery, supported across all modern browsers (Chrome 32+, Firefox 65+, Safari 14+, Edge 18+), and offers better compression than JPEG/PNG without the encoding overhead of AVIF.

CMS support: WordPress 5.8+ (July 2021) supports WebP natively. Most modern CMS platforms and CDNs (Cloudflare, Akamai, Fastly) can automatically serve WebP to compatible browsers via content negotiation.

Email limitation: Most email clients (Outlook, Gmail web, Apple Mail) do not support WebP. Always use JPG or PNG for email images, or provide a JPG fallback via <picture> elements in HTML emails.

GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) supports both static and animated images with a maximum palette of 256 colors. Originally created in 1987 by CompuServe, GIF uses LZW lossless compression and binary transparency (1-bit alpha). While technically outdated for most use cases—animations are inefficient, color depth is limited, and file sizes are large—GIF remains the de facto standard for simple animated content on social platforms.

Authoritative reference: GIF89a Specification (W3C)

GIF persists primarily for animations and memes due to universal compatibility. For static images, PNG offers superior compression and color depth. For modern animations, MP4/WebM video formats deliver dramatically smaller files.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will animated WebPs become animated GIFs?

Yes. Our converter detects if your WebP is animated and preserves every frame — timing, loops, and transparency. Your animated WebPs convert to fully animated GIFs that play identically in any browser or app that supports GIF.

  • Animated WebPs → Animated GIF (all frames preserved with original timing)
  • Static WebPs → Static GIF (single frame)

Why convert WebP to GIF instead of keeping WebP?

GIF has universal support. While WebP is more efficient, some platforms don't accept it:

  • Older email clients: Outlook, Yahoo Mail, and many email clients don't render WebP
  • Legacy CMS systems: Older WordPress, Drupal, or custom CMS may not support WebP
  • Certain social networks: Some platforms prefer or require GIF for animations
  • Older browsers: IE11 and older Safari versions don't support WebP

When you need guaranteed playback compatibility, GIF is the safe choice.

How long can animated WebPs be?

We support animations up to 1,000 frames per file. The maximum duration depends on your animation's frame rate:

  • 10 fps: Up to 1 minute 40 seconds
  • 15 fps: Up to 1 minute 7 seconds
  • 24 fps: Up to 42 seconds
  • 30 fps: Up to 33 seconds

This covers most animated content including screen recordings, reaction GIFs, and short clips.

Will my GIF file be larger than the WebP?

Usually yes. This is the trade-off for universal compatibility:

  • GIF: Uses LZW compression from 1987
  • WebP: Uses modern VP8/VP9 compression

Typical size increase:

  • A 500 KB WebP might become a 1-3 MB GIF
  • Animated files see the largest size increase
  • Simple graphics with flat colors compress better

If file size is critical, keep the WebP where supported and use GIF only for legacy platforms.

What about the 256-color limitation?

GIF is limited to 256 colors per frame. Our converter uses high-quality dithering to produce the best possible result:

  • Flat-color graphics: Convert almost perfectly
  • Gradients: Dithering simulates smooth transitions
  • Photos: May show visible banding (consider keeping WebP for photos)

For the best GIF quality, source images with simpler color palettes work best.

Can I convert static WebP images to GIF?

Yes. Static WebPs convert to static GIFs. However, for static images:

  • PNG is usually better for graphics, logos, and screenshots (lossless, full color)
  • JPEG is usually better for photos (smaller files, millions of colors)

GIF makes most sense when you need animation support or are targeting legacy systems that specifically require GIF.

How do you handle transparency in WebP?

WebP supports full alpha transparency (256 levels). GIF only supports binary transparency (fully transparent or fully opaque).

  • Fully transparent pixels: Preserved exactly
  • Fully opaque pixels: Preserved exactly
  • Semi-transparent pixels: Converted to either fully transparent or fully opaque

Soft edges, shadows, and anti-aliased edges may appear slightly harder in the output GIF. This is a fundamental limitation of the GIF format.

Will my animated GIF loop forever like the original WebP?

Yes. We preserve animation behavior from your source WebP:

  • Loop behavior: Infinite-looping WebPs become infinite-looping GIFs
  • Frame timing: Frame delays are preserved
  • Frame order: All frames converted in original sequence

Your animated GIF will behave like the original WebP.

Can I use GIF in emails?

Yes—GIF has universal email support. This is one of the main reasons to convert WebP to GIF:

  • Animated GIFs work in: Gmail, Outlook (desktop & web), Apple Mail, Yahoo Mail, and nearly all email clients
  • WebP in email: Very limited support—most clients won't display it

For email newsletters with animations, GIF remains the only reliable choice.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 25 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 25 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 26-50 MB: 2 credits
  • 51-75 MB: 3 credits
  • 76-100 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 40 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB image = 1 credit. A 95 MB image = 4 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business30,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit per 25 MB, images under 25 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 images per month.
