AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) leverages the AV1 video codec to deliver next-generation compression—typically 50% smaller than JPEG at equivalent quality, with support for HDR, wide color gamut, and both lossy and lossless compression. Standardized by the Alliance for Open Media in 2019, AVIF offers 10-bit and 12-bit color depth plus full alpha transparency. Encoding is slower than JPEG or WebP, but visual quality per byte is exceptional.
Authoritative reference: AVIF Specification (AOMedia)
AVIF is ideal for modern web delivery where cutting-edge compression and HDR support matter. Browser adoption reached critical mass in 2021-2023, with Chrome 85+, Firefox 93+, and Safari 16.4+ now supporting AVIF natively. Encoding is 2-3× slower than WebP, but the compression gains typically justify the extra CPU time for server-side batch processing. For maximum compatibility, serve AVIF with WebP and JPG fallbacks using <picture> elements.
GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) supports both static and animated images with a maximum palette of 256 colors. Originally created in 1987 by CompuServe, GIF uses LZW lossless compression and binary transparency (1-bit alpha). While technically outdated for most use cases—animations are inefficient, color depth is limited, and file sizes are large—GIF remains the de facto standard for simple animated content on social platforms.
Authoritative reference: GIF89a Specification (W3C)
GIF persists primarily for animations and memes due to universal compatibility. For static images, PNG offers superior compression and color depth. For modern animations, MP4/WebM video formats deliver dramatically smaller files.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will animated AVIFs become animated GIFs?
Yes. AVIF supports animation sequences just like GIF and WebP. Our converter detects animated AVIFs and preserves every frame — timing, loops, and transparency. Your animated AVIFs convert to fully animated GIFs.
- Animated AVIFs → Animated GIF (all frames preserved with original timing)
- Static AVIFs → Static GIF (single frame)
Why convert AVIF to GIF instead of keeping AVIF?
AVIF is the newest image format and has limited browser support. GIF works everywhere:
- Safari: AVIF only supported since Safari 16 (iOS 16, macOS Ventura)
- Older browsers: Chrome before 85, Firefox before 93 don't support AVIF
- Email clients: Almost no email clients support AVIF
- Legacy systems: Many CMS, apps, and platforms only accept GIF/JPEG/PNG
When you need maximum compatibility, GIF is the universal choice.
How long can animated AVIFs be?
We support animations up to 1,000 frames per file. The maximum duration depends on your animation's frame rate:
- 10 fps: Up to 1 minute 40 seconds
- 15 fps: Up to 1 minute 7 seconds
- 24 fps: Up to 42 seconds
- 30 fps: Up to 33 seconds
This covers most animated content including short clips, reaction images, and animated stickers.
Will my GIF file be much larger than the AVIF?
Yes, often significantly. This is the cost of universal compatibility:
- AVIF: Uses cutting-edge AV1 compression (best compression available)
- GIF: Uses 1987-era LZW compression
Typical size increase:
- A 200 KB AVIF might become a 2-5 MB GIF
- Animated files see the largest size increase
- The more complex the content, the larger the GIF
If file size is critical, keep the AVIF where supported and use GIF only for legacy platforms.
What about AVIF's HDR and wide color gamut?
GIF only supports 256 colors in standard RGB. If your AVIF uses advanced color features:
- HDR: Tone-mapped to standard dynamic range
- Wide color gamut (P3, Rec. 2020): Converted to sRGB
- 10/12-bit color depth: Quantized to 256 colors per frame
High-quality dithering preserves visual appearance as much as possible, but HDR content will look different in GIF. This is a fundamental limitation of the GIF format.
Can I convert static AVIF images to GIF?
Yes. Static AVIFs convert to static GIFs. However, for static images:
- PNG is usually better for graphics, logos, and screenshots (lossless, full color)
- JPEG is usually better for photos (smaller files, millions of colors)
GIF excels specifically for animated content where you need universal playback support.
What happens to AVIF transparency?
AVIF supports full alpha transparency (like PNG). GIF only supports binary transparency (on/off per pixel).
- Fully transparent pixels: Preserved exactly
- Fully opaque pixels: Preserved exactly
- Semi-transparent pixels: Converted to either fully transparent or fully opaque
This may affect soft edges, shadows, and anti-aliased content. Glass effects and gradual transparency transitions will appear harder in the output GIF.
Will my animated GIF loop forever like the original AVIF?
Yes. We preserve animation behavior from your source AVIF:
- Loop behavior: Infinite-looping AVIFs become infinite-looping GIFs
- Frame timing: Frame delays are preserved
- Frame order: All frames converted in original sequence
Your animated GIF will behave like the original AVIF.
Can I use GIF in emails?
Yes—GIF has universal email support. This is one of the main reasons to convert AVIF to GIF:
- Animated GIFs work in: Gmail, Outlook (desktop & web), Apple Mail, Yahoo Mail, and nearly all email clients
- AVIF in email: Almost no support—most clients won't display it
For email newsletters with animations, GIF is the only reliable choice.
What are the limits for this converter?
| Tier | Max File Size | Max Files/Batch | Parallel Processing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 25 MB | 50 files | 3 at once |
| Pro | 200 MB | 200 files | 6 at once |
| Business | 1024 MB | 1000 files | 10 at once |
Note: File size limits are specific to this converter. Batch and parallel processing limits apply to all images converters site-wide. See all converter limits →
How are credits calculated for this conversion?
Cost: 1 credit per 25 MB
How it works:
- Files up to 25 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
- 26-50 MB: 2 credits
- 51-75 MB: 3 credits
- 76-100 MB: 4 credits
- Over 1000 MB: 40 credits (maximum cap)
Example: A 5 MB image = 1 credit. A 95 MB image = 4 credits.
Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).
What are my daily and monthly credit limits?
Credit allocations vary by account tier:
| Tier | Daily Limit | Monthly Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 50 credits/day | — |
| Pro | — | 10,000 credits/month |
| Business | — | 30,000 credits/month |
Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.
Note: With 1 credit per 25 MB, images under 25 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 images per month.
