NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's proprietary RAW image format used by all Nikon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras since 1999. Built on TIFF structure, NEF stores unprocessed 12-bit or 14-bit sensor data, preserving maximum dynamic range and color information for post-production flexibility. Files include embedded JPEG previews and comprehensive EXIF metadata including lens data, focus point, and metering information.

NEF is essential for photographers using Nikon cameras who need maximum editing flexibility. For sharing or web publishing, conversion to JPEG is necessary since RAW formats require specialized software like Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, or Nikon's own ViewNX-i and NX Studio applications.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is the universal standard for photographic images, using lossy DCT-based compression to achieve 10:1 or higher compression ratios with minimal visible quality loss. First published in 1992, it supports 24-bit color and works across every device, browser, and application. The lossy nature means repeated editing and saving degrades quality—best used as a final delivery format.

JPEG excels at photographic content and remains the de facto standard for sharing, publishing, and web delivery. With mature encoders like MozJPEG delivering excellent quality-to-size ratios, JPEG continues to dominate despite newer alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an NEF file?

NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's proprietary RAW image format used across all Nikon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras since 1999.

NEF files contain unprocessed 12-14 bit sensor data, preserving maximum dynamic range for exposure correction, white balance adjustment, and color grading in software like Lightroom, Capture One, or Nikon's own NX Studio.

The tradeoff: NEF files are 25-60 MB each (depending on resolution), can't be viewed directly in browsers, and require conversion for sharing online or via messaging apps.

What Nikon cameras shoot NEF?

All Nikon DSLRs and mirrorless cameras: Z9, Z8, Z7 II, Z7, Z6 III, Z6 II, Z6, Z5, Zf, Zfc, Z50, Z30. Also D850, D810, D800, D780, D750, D500, D7500, D7200, D5600, D3500, and virtually all Nikon cameras since the D1 in 1999.

Will I lose quality converting NEF to JPG?

For viewing and sharing, no visible loss. We use quality 90 JPEG encoding—higher than typical web images. You lose RAW editing flexibility (can't recover highlights/shadows like in Lightroom or Capture One), but the visual output is excellent. For archival, keep your original NEF files.

What settings are used for the conversion?

Conversion settings:

  • White balance: Preserved from your camera's as-shot settings
  • Exposure: Auto-brightness applied (matches Nikon ViewNX-i output)
  • Color space: sRGB with standard gamma curve for accurate web display
  • JPEG quality: 90 — higher than typical web images for excellent detail retention
  • Metadata: Stripped for privacy (no GPS, camera info, or shooting settings)

Output matches Nikon ViewNX-i and NX Studio applications. We use the same auto-brightness and color processing that Nikon software applies when exporting to JPEG.

How much smaller will the JPG be?

Typically 85-95% smaller. A 60 MB NEF from a Z8/Z9 becomes 3-8 MB JPG. A 45 MB NEF from a D850 becomes 2-5 MB JPG. A 25 MB NEF from a Z6 becomes 1-4 MB JPG. Actual size depends on image complexity and detail.

What happens to EXIF data (camera settings, GPS)?

Stripped by default for privacy. Camera model, lens info, GPS coordinates, and shooting settings are removed during conversion. This protects your privacy when sharing online.

What if I need lossless output?

Use our NEF to PNG converter for lossless conversion. PNG preserves every pixel—ideal for editing in Photoshop/GIMP or archiving masters. Files are larger (80-100 MB vs 3-8 MB), but quality is identical to RAW. JPG is better for sharing/web use.

How are credits calculated for this conversion?

Cost: 1 credit per 50 MB

How it works:

  • Files up to 50 MB: 1 credit (minimum)
  • 51-100 MB: 2 credits
  • 101-150 MB: 3 credits
  • 151-200 MB: 4 credits
  • Over 1000 MB: 20 credits (maximum cap)

Example: A 5 MB photo = 1 credit. A 95 MB photo = 2 credits.

Why per-megabyte? Larger files require more resources (processing, bandwidth, storage).

What are my daily and monthly credit limits?

Credit allocations vary by account tier:

TierDaily LimitMonthly Limit
Free50 credits/day
Pro10,000 credits/month
Business30,000 credits/month

Daily credits (Free tier, including guests) reset every day at midnight UTC. Monthly credits (Pro & Business) reset on your billing cycle date.

Note: With 1 credit per 50 MB, RAW files under 50 MB cost 1 credit each. Pro users can convert 10,000 RAW files per month.
